Our research was recently featured in Haaretz, discussing our paper Cleaning house or quiet quitting? Large-scale analysis of account deletion behaviour on Tumblr into why people delete their social media accounts. Conducted with Ran Wolf and led by the graduate student Ruth Sarig, the study analyzed 4.5 million Tumblr users to uncover surprising trends in user behavior leading up to account deletion.

We show that contrary to assumptions, those deeply engaged with the platform are more prone to deleting their accounts entirely, often after systematically “cleaning” their profiles by removing posts. Social influence plays a significant role—when friends leave a platform, the likelihood of others following increases dramatically. And many who quit are tech-savvy users concerned about data privacy and the implications of sharing personal information online.
