As part of the lab’s ongoing project on COVID-19 and its effect on public transportation in Israel. Here, we share data and code to analyze a sample of public transportation schedules and real-time information about bus locations.

The data and code are available in the OSF repository, Israel Public Transportation during COVID.

The first dataset was collected and analyzed in a Master’s project by Ira Druyanov, analyzing how the pandemic affected the planned and executed availability of public transportation in four urban areas in Israel. Ira sampled the planned rides of 23 public transportation routes in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Bnei Brak, Haifa, and Kiryat Tivon, between September and December of 2020 (the time of the second lockdown in Israel). The bus locations were sampled every 5 minutes, resulting in a very detailed dataset.

In the report, Ira documents the impact of the lockdown on the planned bus frequency but also shows how many times the execution was significantly lower than the planning, especially when some of the lockdown restrictions were lifted. You can download the report (in Hebrew) here.
