Title: Understanding and Enhancing the Online Safety of Older Adults with Collective Efficacy
Abstract: Older adults (people who are 65 or older) face increasing online security and privacy threats in a rapidly changing technological landscape. However, many of them do not face these challenges alone: they rely on family and friends for support and advise. In this talk, we will discuss how collective efficacy can be used as a theoretical construct in understanding and enhancing the online safety on older adults. We will review several studies, utilizing experiments, surveys, and co-design sessions, to understand how older adults seek support today, how family and friends help and advise them in these issues, and how social technologies can solve difficult problems in asking and providing help. We summarize the discussion by suggesting a new theoretical model for collective efficacy in online safety – focusing on social groups, rather than on the individual user, as our main unit of engagement and analysis.
